What is Blue Light

What Is Blue Light? How It Affects Your Eyes & Sleep

Discover how blue light from phones, computers, LED lights, and other digital devices can affect your eyes and sleep, and learn why protecting yourself from blue light matters.

What Is Blue Light?

What Is Blue Light?

Blue light is high-energy, short-wavelength light emitted by digital screens, LED lighting and, in far greater quantities, the sun. Daylight blue is part of what keeps your body clock running on time. The question this page is about is the artificial kind, in the evening, when your body is expecting darkness.

Why Evening Light Matters

Why Evening Light Matters

Light in the evening suppresses melatonin, the hormone that rises as your body prepares for sleep — this is one of the better-established findings in sleep research. Shorter wavelengths do it more than longer ones, which is why filtering them is the idea behind evening lenses. How much that changes anyone's sleep in practice varies a lot from person to person, and we set out what the trials actually found on our science page.

How Sleep ZM Helps Protect Your Sleep

How Sleep ZM Helps Protect Your Sleep

Our evening lenses filter the short-wavelength end of the spectrum: SleepAid orange at 99% across 380–550nm, SleepAidMax red at 99.7% across 380–580nm, both independently lab-tested and certified against ISO 12312-1. Daytime, photochromic and reading options are lighter filters for wear when you still need accurate colour. Every figure is published on our science page, lens by lens.

KEY BENEFITS OF USING OUR BLUE LIGHT GLASSES

EVENING LIGHT AND SLEEP

Artificial light in the hours before bed suppresses melatonin and can push your body clock later. Our evening lenses filter 99–99.7% of the wavelengths most involved, worn for the last two to three hours of the day. Whether that translates into better sleep for you specifically is where the evidence gets thinner than most of this industry admits — we've published what the trials found rather than summarising them flatteringly.

Comfort on Screens

Long screen sessions leave a lot of people's eyes feeling tired. The honest position is that the research does not show blue-light filtering fixes that — the 2023 Cochrane review found no benefit for eye strain, and we say so on our science page. What our lighter lenses do offer is a softer, warmer view of a bright display, plus anti-glare coating, across a wide range of frames and fits.

Lab-Tested, Not Just Claimed

Every one of our fourteen lenses is independently tested by Micor-Light Optics against ISO 12312-1 and ANSI Z80.3, and we publish the full measured data — blocking percentage, wavelength range, visible light transmission and filter category — for all of them. Most of this industry publishes a percentage and nothing else. That testing is what we stand behind; we don't claim the glasses treat anything.

UV Protection

All our lenses are UV400 rated, blocking ultraviolet light up to 400nm. UV exposure is a genuine, well-established risk to long-term eye health — unlike screen blue light, where the American Academy of Ophthalmology's position is that there's no good evidence of damage. UV400 is a real protection worth having; we're not going to dress it up as more than it is.
